The story of Missouri Mines Historic Site is so amazing, it’s almost hard to believe. For over 100 years, the mining mill produced the nation’s majority of mined lead, and became known as the Old Lead Belt. What is left is over 1,000 miles of mine tunnels on various levels below the ground and 300 miles of underground railroad tracks.
In 1976, the 8,244 acre complex and land was converted into St. Joe State Park. A few years later, the mill was declared a historic site.
Tours of the Missouri Mines Historic Site are available on demand for individuals and families. Schools and large groups may tour together with a planned visit. The tours will cover topics about mining, the site’s history, earth science, geology, and minerology.
